Figure 15: Adult Incarceration Levels as on the Last Day of 2007/07

Figure 15 depicts the current total adult prison population of South Africa- including both awaiting trial (unsentenced) and sentenced detainees, male and female.

Note: Existing prison population rate (per 100, 000 national population) estimated at 335 (based on estimated national population of 47.8 million at the end of May 2007- United Nations Figures).[1]

Figure 16 indicates current national adult inmate gender incarceration totals- of both awaiting trial (unsentenced) and sentenced prisoners.

Note: Female prisoners reportedly make up 2.1 per cent of the total national prison population.[2]

Figure 17 depicts the current national totals of youth prisoners- both unsentenced and sentenced.

Figure 21 indicates the current national totals of adult inmates in respect of sexual offences- both unsentenced and sentenced.

Figure 22 shows existing national youth inmate totals per respective crime category- economic, violent, and sexual. The data indicates that the bulk of the national youth inmate population are incarcerated or awaiting trial for violent offences, followed by economic offences, then sexual offences.

Figure 23 shows existing national child inmate totals per respective crime category- economic, violent, and sexual. The data indicates that the bulk of the national child inmate population are incarcerated or awaiting trial for violent offences, followed by economic offences, then sexual offences.
