Demonstration Project
The CJCP runs a demonstration youth resilience project in Groblershoop, a Northern Cape town located along the Orange River, about 90 minutes outside Upington. The project is run as a partnership with the Northern Cape Department of Social Development and Population Services, and is aimed at reducing youth offending in the !Kheis District municipal region.

A range of interventions are offered, determined by the specific needs of the specific community, identified through baseline and ongoing data collection, monitoring and evaluation. The interventions are drawn from a comprehensive package of social crime prevention activities, drawing on both South African and International best practice. A model of the CJCP resilience approach can be found here (LINK TO CJCP MODEL DIAGRAM). Through early intervention and targeted approaches such as early childhood development, environmental design, school safety and others, risk factors are mitigated and resilience enhanced. The design, development and implementation of the project is documented at each stage, in order to share what works and what does not work within a rural South African environment.

In addition to the partnership with the provincial Department of Social Development and Population Services, partnerships exist with a range of other government (both provincial and local) and civil society organisations to enhance the impact of the interventions, and to utilise the strategic advantages and strengths of stakeholders rather than trying to duplicate existing work. The project also entails community-based youth diversion project, which aims at reducing repeat offending through a mentoring system that diverts those at risk of repeat offending from the formal criminal justice system.
